4 Ways to Get Moving When Emotions Have You Stuck
Our emotions are so powerful that they can impact not only how we feel, but how we think and act. Sometimes it can feel like we are consumed by our emotions. We are so deep and overwhelmed by them that it can feel like we’re drowning. Thankfully, there are ways that you can move forward when you feel trapped or consumed by your emotions.
When national news or current events invoke trauma and grief on the nation, when you lose someone close to you or when a local tragedy affects the community… these four tips will be helpful as you move forward. I’m not saying that they’re going to fix everything, because they won’t. But hopefully, they’ll help you to get up each morning, ready to push and face your day with courage, determination, and hope.
Why you’ve got to PUSH
When you feel ‘heavy’ because of what’s going on in your life or from what you see on the news, it can be easy to let yourself think – why does anything I’m doing even matter?
You can’t help but feel helpless. However, you’ve got to PUSH. Push is when you don’t feel like doing something, but you push yourself to do it anyway.
Why?
Because we (the small business owners and goal-setters) are where change starts in our world. We don’t have the luxury of staying in bed all day and doing nothing. Remaining stagnant helps nobody. We’ve got to be the change we want to see in the world. We’ve got to leverage our skills, our drive and our willingness to make a change. We’ve got to PUSH.
So, how can you push? Let’s find out:
1. Power Up
Sometimes powering up means pretending. You’ve got to fake it till you make it. If you don’t want to work or go for a jog or whatever it may be, you’ve got to pretend that you do want to do it.
You need to power up, recharge your mindset and do the things that honestly, you’d rather not do. When you’re stuck in your emotions, it’s because you’re inactive. To motivate yourself, you’ve got to move to action. You’ve got to move through the actions as if you want to. That’s how you power up and keep pushing daily.
2. Upward Focus
When we’re focused on ourselves too much, we keep looking to the past for answers or we dwell on everything that could go wrong, we’re not moving forward. It’s like being stuck in quicksand and the only way to get out of it is to stop looking down and start looking up.
To change your mindset, you need to think positive and look ahead. What are the good things you have in your life? What good things are coming to you if you work for them? You’ve got to stop being ‘stuck’ in your emotions and start having an upward focus. Focus on where you’re heading, not on what’s wrong with where you are.

3. Smile
Yes, this is a simple one but hear me out. When you smile more, you can trick your brain into thinking that you’re happy. Smile to others on the street, smile to your neighbors, smile to your haters – smile for yourself.
If this is hard for you, then give yourself more reasons to smile. Do things that make you happy. Watch funny videos that put a smile on your face. Look around and see all of the things in your life that give you a reason to SMILE.
4. Heavy Lifting
Don’t worry, I’m not going to start telling you that it’s time to hit the gym. By heavy lifting, I mean heavy lifting in your personal life, your business or whatever it is that you’re working on right now.
Whether you want to train a muscle or train your mindset, the way to do it is through some heavy lifting. This means you’ve got to grin and bear it. You’ve got to put the work in to get the results you want. Heavy lifting increases endorphins and helps you to break free from that paralyzed state that you’ve been stuck in.
We’ve got to PUSH. The world needs you to push and YOU need you to push. So, you’ve got to power up, look upward instead of down at your feet, smile more and do some heavy lifting!
